BACH LISTENING-ROOM – TOURING 17-18-19

Fifteen years after his first, path-breaking recording and tour of Bach’s six solo cello suites, cellist Matt Haimovitz renews his lifelong exploration of these beloved works with a new recording, J.S. Bach The Cello Suites According to Anna Magdalena on the acclaimed PENTATONE Oxingale Series.

Inspired by the architecture of the suites, a breathtaking summation of the vernaculars Bach absorbed from France, Italy, Spain and beyond, Haimovitz is commissioning new overtures to each of the suites from composers influenced by folk music from around the globe, including Philip Glass, Vijay Iyer. Mohammeh Fairouz, Du Yun, Roberto Sierra and Luna Pearl Woolf

Along Haimovitz’s Bach Listening-Room tour, audiences may enjoy the transcendent journey of Bach’s six suites in one marathon performance, or experience Haimovitz’s complete vision: each suite introduced by its new overture performed over two or three consecutive performances.

In 2000, with the recording that launched the artist’s own Oxingale Records, Haimovitz embarked on an extensive tour of North America, taking J.S. Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello out of the concert hall and into music clubs and coffeehouses. Matt Haimovitz is considered a pioneer in bringing classical chamber music back to intimate, alternative spaces.

Haimovitz’s personal interpretations of the suites were received with great acclaim, culminating in a historic performance at New York’s infamous punk palace, CBGB, filmed by ABC News for Nightline. The upcoming tour will embrace intimate venues of all sorts: churches, theaters, as well as alternative spaces.
