LINDA YUDIN, who earned her MFA in Dance (Ethnology) from UCLA in 1988, has devoted more than two decades to researching, performing and teaching Afro-Brazilian dance, embodied in Viver Brasil's innovative stage presentations. These presentations push choreographic boundaries, link traditional and contemporary Afro-Brazilian dance, explore Brazil's rich racial, social and political history, and are living extensions of the history of Afro-Brazilian dance on stage, Candomblé ceremony, and Bahian carnival. Viver Brasil's growing repertory reflects Yudin's unique blend of artistic excellence, rigorous research and continuous dialogue with living masters in Bahia and younger virtuoso musicians and choreographers. Yudin has lectured, taught, published, and performed Brazilian dance at colleges, universities, elementary, middle and high schools, conferences, and communities throughout the U.S., Brazil and South Africa. Along with Viver Brasil’s co-founder Luiz Badaró, Yudin received the prestigious “excellence in teaching” award from the board of directors of Dance Resource Center of Greater L.A./Lester Horton Dance Awards 2009. She is the recipient of Durfee Foundation grants and has been awarded a faculty fellowship at Santa Monica College.
Yudin has secured major funding for Viver Brasil from the New England Foundation for the Arts/National Dance Project, the NEA, L.A. County Arts Commission, L.A. Department of Cultural Affairs, the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, the Amgen Foundation, Heineken USA, Aeromexico, Varig Brasil Airlines, TAM Brazilian Airlines, Southwest Airlines.
