PHILADANCO

2009-10 marks PHILADANCO’s 40th Anniversary Season. To celebrate the occasion, several new works are being added to the company’s repertoire. Most notably, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh have commissioned a new work from Urban Bush Women’s Founder and Artistic Director, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. Other choreographers creating work for the 40th Anniversary season include Associate Artistic Director of Ailey II, Troy Powell; Philadanco alumnus, Hope Boykin; Zane Booker, Philadanco trained dancer who went on to work with Netherlands Dance Theater and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo; and well-known Ailey dancer and choreographer, Camille Brown. Many of these new works premiered during the company’s Spring 2009 home season at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

PHILADANCO Receives NDP Funding
for New Jawole Zollar work

PHILADANCO received National Dance Project funding to support a new work by Urban Bush Women's Founding and Artistic Director, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. By Way of the Funk is a new work that harnesses the energy & culture of funk music. As it says in the song, "funk not only moves it removes, dig". These words are emblematic of the way funk music makes you want to get up out of your seat and dance and forget your troubles. Set to the music of Funkadelics & Parliament, this four-part work is a joyous celebration of the 40 years of PHILADANCO'S contributions to American dance.

The four parts include “How We Got to the Funk”, an exploration of music and movement from 50's to 70's; “Cool Baby, Cool”, minimalism as only cool can embody; “By Way of the Drum” the hotter side of funk; and “Standing on the Verge” a reflection of the Funkadelics’ notoriously outrageous costumes and in your face performances.

By Way of the Funk was commissioned by the August Wilson Center for African American Culture and The Kimmel Center and will be touring in the 10-11 season.
