Steve Reich's "2 x 5" - Touring 10-11

Bang on a Can All-Stars Play Steve Reich

The immediacy of the rhythm, the intensity of the sound, even the instruments of rock music have bled into the world of Bang on a Can since its inception. And now we have the piece that captures that spirit. Composed for two sets of traditional “rock” instrumentation – two electric guitars, bass, piano, and drums, Steve Reich’s new “2x5” is a pulsating work performed by members of Bang on a Can All-Stars + tape (or by an all-live 10 player ensemble on special occasions as is intended for the Carnegie Hall concert in April 2011). Having collaborated closely with Reich for over 20 years, “2x5” is the first Reich work to be premiered by Bang on a Can, with its recent world premiere opening the Manchester International Festival on a shared bill with the legendary German electronica pioneers Kraftwerk. “2x5” innovatively folds ultra-sophisticated musicianship into a rock quintet format, a perfect blend for Bang on a Can All-Stars who have been freely crossing such boundaries since their formation in 1992. “2x5” is a cornerstone performance, whether part of an all-Reich program featuring seminal works by this American master or combined with exclusively all-new commissioned repertoire from composers such as Louis Andriessen, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Michael Nyman, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Julia Wolfe and more.
